Open Question: How much German should I know if I plan on traveling to Germany this winter?

I'm traveling to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland with my family this winter, from 12/29-1/15. We're flying into Berlin, Germany and leaving from Zurich, Switzerland. I'm just wondering -- how much German will we have to know in order to get around? I'm assuming it will be much easier to get around in Berlin and the major cities on little to no German, but I'm guessing it will also be that much more difficult in the smaller towns in the Black Forest or along the Romantic Road, etc. Also, we're going in the off-season as far as the major tourist rush goes (with the exception of the ski resorts, which we do not plan on visiting), so I'm wondering if we'll need to know more German on this occasion.
